First moblog entry

My first attempt at moblogging since this was posted from my 9-month old iPhone! However I am sending this through a wifi network so perhaps this is not a strict moblogged entry after all…

A moving target

“Programming today is a race between software engineers striving to build bigger and better idiot-proof programs, and the Universe trying to produce bigger and better idiots. So far, the Universe is winning.”

Digital camera

Recently, two new digital SLRs were let loose on the market. Both kits (body + 1 zoom lens) will be sold for less than SG$1800 (or about US$1200). Both sport very similar 10.2 Megapixel sensors.

Since my previous overseas trip to Japan, I had wanted to get a “decent” digital SLR. For its convenience and of course quality. Despite the bulkiness – to be pragmatic, I will not be lugging with me on every single trip – I feel this is the right thing for me.

I was initially quite tempted by the Sony model, with new features (on-camera image stabilization for increasing sharpness in low light conditions as in the past I liked taking photos in churches or other historical buildings). But after talking to the folks at John 3:16, I am having second thoughts. In any case, it’s best – unless there is an urgent need – not to get the camera upon release. There is likely to be technical issues which need time to resolve.

So, all I can do is wait for now…

Perhaps something from this list of Nikon DSLRs?

Competition

It is positive to want to go first, provided the intention is to pave the way for others, make their path more easy, help them, or show the way. Competition is negative when we wish to defeat others, to bring them down in order to lift ourselves up.

Coincidences

Have you ever had the feeling that when things go wrong, they like to appear in a cluster!?

Well, since Chinese New Year this year (February for the non-Chinese people out there), I have been trying to fix up two PCs for others: one was my former work-horse, stripped-down and sold, and the other was bought from a colleague since it has become a “white elephant”. For the former, prior to it being delivered I noticed that the BIOS was not retaining its settings as soon as power was disconnected – turned out to be a non-critical problem that has at yet no good solution for this series of motherboards from Asus – which after further tinkering was eventually replaced by a second-hand Gigabyte board. In the process, I managed to stuff up another Gigabyte as a result of failed BIOS update and blew up a PSU! Fortunately, the current incarnation seems to be pretty stable and I am not touching it any more… Well, as for the other, there were minor “inconveniences” along the way since this board (MSI Neo2) has only 1 IDE slot and most of my hardware was IDE and not SATA. 🙁 However, as they say, all’s well if it ends well.

Overheard conversation

Had an opportunity to take the MRT – also known as the Metro, Subway, Tube, etc., elsewhere – and overheard the following conversation between a teenage couple.

“Try not to miss me too much!” said the girl as she headed to the door.

Don’t know about you, but it made me cringe inside when I heard it. Perhaps it’s age catching up with me, and it’s a sign that I am no longer anywhere near Generation X-Y-Z… 🙂

The latest release of WordPress, the blogging software that is used on this site, has just been released. Once again, the dev team has done a wonderful job and they have even provided a brief video tour of the new features. Cool!
